Sunrise Over the Rice Terraces of Ubud
January 22, 2026 · 5 min read
A quiet morning walk through emerald steps carved by hand a thousand years ago, before the scooters and selfie swings arrive.
The Tegallalang rice terraces are one of those places Instagram nearly ruined and then, mercifully, moved on from. Show up at 5:45 a.m. and it's just you, a few farmers, and a rooster somewhere down the valley making an opinion known.
I stayed in a family homestay ten minutes north, where breakfast was black rice pudding and the strongest coffee I've had in Asia. The owner walked me through the subak — the thousand-year-old irrigation system that still runs the whole valley — and it reframed everything I saw for the rest of the trip.
Tip the farmers if you photograph them. It's their office you're wandering through.
